It begins with a short, free call with you, usually the son or daughter arranging the book. We talk about your parent, the kind of book you want them to have, and any date you are working towards, a birthday, an anniversary, the holidays.
By the end you will know exactly how it works and what your parent's book will look like. Many families choose to keep the whole thing a surprise until the finished book arrives.
This is the only part your parent has to do. The plan is three or four calls of two and a half hours each, by video or ordinary phone call, and if their story needs a fifth, we make a fifth. We go through their life together. The questions are gentle and easy to answer. Your parent does the talking and we keep things moving.
We come prepared with the questions, from childhood and family and work down to the small things they have not thought about in years. Every call is recorded with permission, so nothing is lost.
Most parents tell us this turns into the best part. Hours spent going back over a whole life, with someone who actually wants to hear it.
We turn those calls into a real book, written out in your parent's own voice, the way a good memoir reads. We do the shaping, so it holds together as a story instead of a pile of transcripts.
Myles writes and shapes every book himself, and pays close attention to how your parent actually speaks.
You receive the finished manuscript to read at your own pace. Mark anything you want changed, whether that is a wrong date or a whole section you would rather leave out. We keep revising until you are happy with it.
Then the book is professionally printed and beautifully bound, and the hardback copies are delivered to your door. You pay the balance only once you have approved the book. If it does not move you, you do not pay it, and your deposit is refunded.
